What is a Family Constellation?
A family constellation is a therapeutic approach aimed at resolving specific issues through awareness and harmonization of our family dynamics. These issues can be relational in nature or address a particular situation or emotion where you seek clarity.
One of the unique aspects of a family constellation is that it takes place in a group setting. No prior experience or knowledge is required—just an open heart and a willingness to engage in the process.
Essentially, a family constellation is like bringing your family tree to life in a physical space, using “representatives.” This creates a dynamic, moving representation of your ancestral lineage, allowing for deep work on transgenerational connections.
If we accept the idea that we are “inhabited” by our family tree and that our unconscious mind is structured spatially, then a constellation allows us to externalize this structure.
This process involves learning a particular kind of listening—one that tunes into the unconscious family and collective dynamics. It provides access to missing pieces in our genealogical inquiry, including hidden family “secrets.”
Participating in a Family Constellation
• It means engaging with the psycho-emotional or symbolic space, which is just as real as the physical space we navigate daily.
• It is a practice of working with spatial and temporal connections, focusing on the intricate web of relationships that bind us to others and the universe, rather than isolating the individual from their context.
• It is an experience rather than an intellectual exercise—something to be lived, a catalyst for transformation.
Practical Information
This will be a full weekend session, during which four to six participants will “constellate”—meaning they will bring a personal question they seek answers for. The other participants will serve as representatives, engaging in the constellation process of others (with guidance) to help bring resolution to their inquiries.
Even as a representative in someone else’s constellation, you will always take away something deeply meaningful for yourself. In fact, sometimes the experience is even more profound this way, as the resonance between different stories can touch your own healing space through others. And as we know, when one person heals a wound, their entire surrounding environment benefits as well.
